Biosecurity in practice
Practical information about cleaning, disinfection and animal health.
Cleaning
Cleaning: the essential first step before disinfection
Cleaning removes the organic material in which pathogens can hide. Washing with water alone reduces the microbial load by about 60%, whereas a good alkaline cleaner can reduce it by approximately 99%—a 2,000-fold difference in the bacteria left behind. A disinfectant can only work properly after thorough cleaning. Cleaning and disinfection are therefore not alternatives, but two stages of one process.
Disinfection
Disinfection: eliminating pathogens after cleaning
Disinfection kills the pathogens that remain on surfaces, materials and in drinking-water lines after thorough cleaning. The result depends on three factors that must all be correct: the product’s spectrum of activity, the right concentration and sufficient contact time.
Poultry
Heat stress in chickens: recognition and prevention
Chickens cannot sweat and mainly lose heat through breathing. In hot, humid weather, this natural cooling may be insufficient. Early recognition, adequate air movement and a reliable water supply help reduce the strain.
Poultry
Red mite in chickens: effects, recognition and control
Poultry red mites hide during the day and are mainly active at night, so an infestation can remain unnoticed for a long time. Regular inspection helps identify signs early and supports a targeted response.
