The challenge
- High disease pressure from PRRS, PED, influenza and Strep. suis, directly affecting growth and mortality.
- Constant risk of ASF entering through feed, people, vehicles and wildlife.
- Biofilm in drinking-water lines as a permanent source of reinfection.
- Transfer of pathogens from sow to piglet around farrowing and in the farrowing unit.
- Cleaning between cycles that may be incomplete because of time pressure.
Our approach
- 01Strict separation of dirty and clean routes and a functioning hygiene barrier with a changing procedure.
- 02All-in/all-out management by unit, with complete cleaning and disinfection between every cycle.
- 03A fixed protocol: pre-soak, alkaline clean, rinse, dry, disinfect and observe the contact time.
- 04Wash sows before entry into the farrowing unit to limit pathogen transfer to piglets.
- 05Drinking-water hygiene: clean lines during downtime and treat water in occupied housing.
- 06Disinfect boots in footbaths at every transition between zones.

Frequently asked questions
01Which disinfectant is effective against African swine fever?
Virkon™S is effective against enveloped viruses such as ASF virus. Thorough pre-cleaning and the correct contact time are essential; we supply the corresponding protocol.
02Why wash a sow before she enters the farrowing unit?
A clean sow carries fewer pathogens into the farrowing unit. Washing with a suitable shampoo before entry reduces pathogen pressure around farrowing and protects vulnerable piglets during their first days.
03How do I control biofilm in a drinking-water line?
Clean the line with Virkon™S at 1% during downtime and rinse thoroughly. Treat water in occupied housing with 1 kg of Virkon™S per 1,000 litres to control biofilm formation and microbial counts.
