Biosecurity for cattle farming

Calf rearing is the most vulnerable stage in cattle farming. Calf diarrhoea and cryptosporidiosis cause mortality, delayed growth and treatment costs, while Cryptosporidium and coccidia oocysts are extremely resistant to ordinary disinfection. Biosecurity BV supplies products and protocols to control infection pressure in calf rearing, while also supporting udder hygiene in dairy farming.

The challenge

  • Calf diarrhoea and cryptosporidiosis causing mortality and treatment costs during the first weeks of life.
  • Cryptosporidium and coccidia oocysts that survive ordinary disinfection.
  • High infection pressure in calving areas and calf housing when cleaning is inadequate.
  • Introduction and spread through equipment, drinking utensils and staff.

Our approach

  1. 01Calf hygiene: clean, dry and disinfected individual pens or hutches and cleaned feeding buckets and teats.
  2. 02Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the calving area between animals.
  3. 03Control oocysts and Cryptosporidium with a product of demonstrated efficacy.
  4. 04Provide sufficient colostrum and separate age groups.
  5. 05Make cleaning before disinfection a fixed part of the protocol.

Frequently asked questions

01Why does ordinary disinfection not control cryptosporidiosis?

Cryptosporidium oocysts have a highly resistant wall and survive most disinfectants. Aldecoc® CMK has demonstrated efficacy against oocysts and worm eggs at a concentration of just 2%.

02How can I reduce calf mortality caused by diarrhoea?

Combine sound colostrum management with strict hygiene: disinfected housing, clean drinking utensils and separated age groups. Where cryptosporidiosis is present, a disinfectant effective against oocysts is essential.

03What is Hyproderm used for?

Hyproderm is a very mild shampoo without disinfecting action, suitable for cleaning teats and udders. It is intended for mild cleaning, not as a disinfecting dip.
