Cleaning: the essential first step before disinfection

Cleaning removes the organic material in which pathogens can hide. Washing with water alone reduces the microbial load by about 60%, whereas a good alkaline cleaner can reduce it by approximately 99%—a 2,000-fold difference in the bacteria left behind. A disinfectant can only work properly after thorough cleaning. Cleaning and disinfection are therefore not alternatives, but two stages of one process.

Why clean before disinfecting?

Disinfectants work on a clean surface. Manure, feed, litter, grease and biofilm form a physical barrier that blocks the product and chemically inactivates many disinfectants. Without a suitable cleaner, up to 2,000 times more bacteria may remain.

The cleaning and disinfection protocol, step by step

  1. 01Dry clean—remove loose organic material.
  2. 02Pre-soak—wet all surfaces with low-pressure water for at least two hours.
  3. 03Foam clean—apply an alkaline foam cleaner with a foam lance.
  4. 04Allow to act—normally for twenty minutes.
  5. 05Rinse—rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  6. 06Dry—allow surfaces to dry before disinfecting.
  7. 07Disinfect—only now apply the disinfectant.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning

01Can cleaning and disinfection be combined in one step?

No. Complete the cleaning process first, rinse, and then disinfect. Some cleaners are specifically formulated so that they do not interfere with the subsequent disinfection stage.

02How do I know whether a surface is clean enough?

Visually, there should be no visible dirt, grease or biofilm. An objective check can be performed with a hygiene-monitoring test such as Bio-swab™.

03How long should the cleaner remain in contact?

Normally twenty minutes after application, following a pre-soak of at least two hours. Always consult the product label.
