Biosecurity for goat farming

In dairy-goat farming, the period around kidding is critical for both animal and public health. Large quantities of the Q-fever agent may be released through the placenta, amniotic fluid and afterbirth, while young kids are vulnerable to cryptosporidiosis and coccidiosis. Biosecurity BV supplies the cleaning and disinfection products and protocols needed to control these risks.

The challenge

  • Q fever (Coxiella burnetii), released in large quantities around kidding—a zoonosis affecting animals and people.
  • Cryptosporidiosis and coccidiosis causing mortality and delayed growth in kids.
  • Hygiene during kid rearing as a decisive factor in survival and growth.
  • Introduction and spread through equipment, staff and visitors.

Our approach

  1. 01Thoroughly clean and disinfect kidding areas, pens and equipment around and after kidding.
  2. 02Remove placentas and afterbirth carefully to reduce Q-fever pressure.
  3. 03Maintain strict hygiene in kid housing, with clean, dry and disinfected pens.
  4. 04Address oocysts and Cryptosporidium with a product of demonstrated efficacy.
  5. 05Control access and manage visitors with the zoonotic risk in mind.

Frequently asked questions

01Why is Q fever particularly risky around kidding?

Very large numbers of Coxiella burnetii can be released in the placenta, amniotic fluid and afterbirth during kidding. The bacterium spreads through the air and is zoonotic. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the kidding area and careful disposal of afterbirth are therefore essential.

02Is Virkon™S effective against the Q-fever agent?

Yes. According to its authorisation, Virkon™S is effective against Coxiella burnetii. Thorough cleaning beforehand and the correct concentration and contact time are essential; we supply the corresponding protocol.

03How can I prevent cryptosporidiosis and coccidiosis in kids?

Provide clean, dry and disinfected rearing accommodation, ensure adequate colostrum and separate age groups. Coccidia oocysts resist ordinary disinfection; under high pressure, a product effective against oocysts, such as Aldecoc® CMK, is required.
