The challenge
- Biofilm in drinking-water lines as a permanent source of bacteria and reinfection.
- Deposits of vitamins, medicines and minerals that feed contamination.
- Reduced performance of products administered through water because of dirty pipes.
- Elevated microbial counts affecting intestinal health and technical results.
Our approach
- 01Clean lines during downtime: loosen biofilm and flush it out completely using Virkon™S at 1%.
- 02Treat water in occupied housing with Virkon™S at no more than 1 g per litre of drinking water.
- 03Dose accurately and proportionally with the Dosatron D3WL2VF dosing pump.
- 04Flush correctly after courses of medicines or vitamins.
- 05Verify results through microbial-count and water-quality analysis.

The Dosatron D3WL dosing pump
The D3WL dispenser range meets dosing requirements for flow rates from 10 to 3,000 l/h. Features include an optimised design, polypropylene pump body, ergonomic dosing adjustment, micro- and macro-dosing through a single outlet injection point and suitability for alkaline or acidic products.
D3WL2VF specifications: flow rate 3 m³/h (3,000 l/h), dosing range 0.2–2% (1:500–1:50) and operating pressure 0.3–6 bar. The model code means: D3 = 3 m³/h, WL = Waterline, 2 = 0.2–2% dosing range and VF = seals recommended for acids.
Worked example: Virkon™S in drinking water with the Dosatron D3WL2VF
Data: average daily water volume 2,000 litres/day; maximum final Virkon™S concentration 1 g/litre; this example uses 0.5 g/litre (0.05%). Dosatron setting: 0.5% (1:200).
- Virkon™S required per 24 hours = 2,000 l/day × 0.5 g/l = 1 kg of powder.
- Stock solution per 24 hours = 2,000 litres / 200 = 10 litres/day.
- Stock-solution concentration = 0.5 g/l × 200 = 100 g/l.
- For ten days of stock solution: 100 litres of water with 10 kg of Virkon™S.
Frequently asked questions
01How can I recognise biofilm in my drinking-water system?
Biofilm is often invisible until pipes are opened. Signs include a slimy deposit around nipples, elevated microbial counts in water analyses and disappointing technical performance. An inspection of the line provides confirmation.
02Which Virkon™S dose should I use for a drinking-water line?
Use a 1% solution to clean lines during downtime. For water treatment in occupied housing, use no more than 1 g of Virkon™S per litre of drinking water. The Dosatron D3WL2VF provides proportional, accurate dosing.
03Why use a Dosatron dosing pump?
Dosatron operates using water pressure and doses proportionally, so concentration remains constant despite variations in flow or pressure. The D3WL2VF is also suitable for acidic and alkaline products.
